AS3745 evacuation diagram is a standard that describes the layout, equipment and installation of fireproof and fire-resistant materials, systems and equipment. The Australian Standard for general use is for an emergency exit to be located an average of 5.5 metres / 16.8 feet from each of the rows of seats. This equates to there being one emergency exit every 23 seats in an auditorium, cinema or theatre. There can be expected to be 30-60 seconds from the time a fire alarm is activated until all patrons are evacuated from the building safely.
It should be noted that the direction of escape travel is left to the discretion of the responsible person or persons such as the building Superintendent, or duty officer. The arrangements for an evacuation must be made before an emergency occurs and be clearly shown in the maps and diagrams provided in AS 3745. To comply with this standard all buildings must provide means of evacuation that are planned and detailed as per AS 3745.
